NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY – SOCIAL SCIENCES
Client: University Of Newcastle
Contract Value: $250,713.00
Project Type: Alterations
Duration: 3 months
This project involved the refurbishment and extension of an existing building within the Social Sciences Faculty of Newcastle University. Works were designed and constructed to provide functional commercial grade amenities that can withstand the constant use by hundreds of students every week while still making a strong design statement in line with the forward thinking of the University and its students. An internal design feature that creates a feeling of depth within the building is the apertures in ceiling framing for bulkheads which allow a view through to the existing timber batten ceiling at high level. Externally, glazed feature bricks in the unusual colours of Tangerine and Caviar have been used to create the façade, particular attention was required when laying of these bricks as they now form the main focal point of the building. Other features of the project include: Altair power louvers at a high level and glazed awnings over the entry. The landscaped surrounds which include bush rock retaining, interlock pavers and a series of hardwood seating allows this extension to blend into the natural bushland setting of the University.
The works were undertaken within the confines of a fully functioning area of the University resulting in the need for consistent management of vehicle and pedestrian movement to ensure student and lecturer safety. This was in addition to standard building site safety requirements. Sub-contractors were carefully selected for their ability to work within the constraints of an occupied site and commitment to delivering this project within a compressed timeframe. The level of finish provided and attention to detail has resulted in much positive feedback from our client and afforded us the opportunity to continue working on other contracts within the University site.
