Stars of Newcastle success

Local everyday hero, Mato Demir, of Demato Construction in Beresfield, is celebrating his recent success at the third annual Stars of Newcastle Dance for Cancer Council event. Not only did Mato exceed his fundraising goals, he came equal first with Sam Djodan from NBN Television on the night, scoring a perfect 10 from all three judges!

For the June 17th performance, a night of glitz and glamour held in Newcastle at the NEX Centre, Mato was partnered with Eliza from Newcastle Dance Academy. Of his country rock debut and training, she said “Mato has been amazing. He’s been so much fun every time, and really, I’ve had to keep up with him.”

Mato’s personal fundraising efforts also exceeded expectation, with his final tally hitting $53,430.67 after setting a lofty target of $50,000. “I couldn’t have reached this target, and achieved this goal without the backing of my team. Both my family and work family and all those who have sponsored fundraisers have gone above and beyond and I’m truly humbled by the support,” said Mato.

All proceeds from the event, and the many fundraisers held by the stars in the lead up to the big night will go to Cancer Council NSW and stay right here in the Hunter to help local families impacted by and battling with cancer. “We raised a combined total of over $240,000 for the Stars of Newcastle event. That’s a huge total. I am stoked and absolutely proud to have been part of this event,” said Mato, “I loved it. The dancing was a little out of my comfort zone, but once we got started, it was really fun. I would definitely do this all over again!”

After 12 weeks of grueling training and intense rehearsals, Mato will go back to normal life with his wife, children, family and work family a changed man. Statistically, just about every individual and family in Australia will be affected by cancer at some point and in some way. It’s time to beat to cancer together, and with the community support displayed throughout Stars of Newcastle, there’s no doubt we can eventually make this happen.
